We don’t know the time, but we know God’s mercy is seen in the Old Testament invitation to come to the mountain of the Lord. When we come to that mountain, we see Jesus giving His life for us so that through faith, we no longer fear the hour of judgment. Today we rejoice in the hour of salvation found in Jesus.

The coming of Advent also reminds us to wait and prepare for God's coming kingdom when Christ's love will reign supreme. Today's service will "hang the greens" and decorate our Sanctuary for the Christmas season, while teaching us about the symbolism we find in the festive decorations that will adorn our building … and our worship.

What about the other 8,199,999,999 people? “For God so loved THE WORLD, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16) Some of those people are sitting next to you and in front of you and behind you. Some of those people are at home, or live in your neighborhood, or work across from you. Each one is important to God, and you and I get to be the ones who share His love in Jesus with them at every opportunity.

What an incredible gift! Through Jesus’ life, death and resurrection, our ultimate citizenship is in heaven. In Him we have been placed on the narrow road to life.
There is an alternate road for all who find the narrow road not to their satisfaction. It promises personal freedom and unconstrained expression. Many people travel this road, but its only destination is the middle of nowhere.
God wants all to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. He doesn’t desire that anyone travel the road to nowhere. Our job? Be available to point them to God’s fork to life!

They mean, “No worries.” And even if you know what the words mean, that doesn’t mean that you have incorporated that meaning into your daily life. As a matter of fact, most of us are probably way too familiar with the opposite of that phrase: There ARE worries!
Jesus meets our worries head on with these powerful words today in the Gospel reading: “Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.” And when we come to grips with the reality that God has given us the kingdom, then “hakuna matata” is a wonderful phrase!

In our Scripture readings for today, the Holy Spirit alerts us to the dangers of seeking contentment anywhere but in a relationship with God. The things of this world will pass away; God’s love for us in Jesus will last forever.
The last two of the 10 Commandments don’t seem very impressive. Don’t covet the stuff and the people that belong to someone else? It turns out, however, that coveting is a slippery slope which can cause us to fall into all sorts of other dangers. “On guard!” people of God! Find your satisfaction and contentment in Jesus, and don’t get caught on the slippery slope of coveting.

One of the results of “being watchful” is becoming aware of the fact that sometimes God wants to use us in answer to our own prayers! As we submit our prayers to Him and watch how He works, we can be ready to be used by Him as a part of His answer. To prepare a place for the crown of His creation who would enter the scene on the 6th Day . . . man and woman! All things prior to the creation of man and woman were created FOR man and woman! And since that time of that day, God has been hyper-focused on His relationship with us . . .
So much so that He was not going to let our sin keep us separate from Him forever, but would provide a Way back to Him through the gift of His Son. Today we thank God the Father for the gift of God the Son whose work on our behalf was delivered to us through God the Holy Spirit. All of God for all of us . . . always!

None of that would have been possible if the Holy Spirit had not intervened in our lives.
The Scripture is also clear in this: “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20) Not only did the Holy Spirit bring us to faith, but He is also always present with us to enable us to live that faith.
On this Pentecost Sunday, we give thanks for the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives!

The Scriptures tell us that Jesus met with His disciples for 40 days after His rising from the dead, after which time He fantastically and miraculously ascended back to heaven.
Since we don’t have a Thursday evening Ascension Service, we get to celebrate that event on this Seventh Sunday of Easter – the last Sunday of Easter in the Church Year prior to diving into the Season of Pentecost. But let’s not rush things . . . let’s let God’s Word regarding Jesus’ ascension affirm His love for us and motivate us for living and loving boldly.

The Season of Easter is soon coming to an end, and the long Season of Pentecost will soon be upon us. The temptation for us as we make the transition out of the Season of Easter is the same temptation we have when moving from the Season of Christmas to the Season of Epiphany: we can leave it in the past because it will come around again. However, there is a huge reality we must never forget no matter what Season of the Church Year we are celebrating: Jesus IS risen! That is not past-tense, but present-tense. Jesus lives! And He lives in us for two very specific purposes: 1) To give us new and forever life; and 2) To use us to help others have new and forever life. Like Frank Sinatra sang, “You can’t have one without the other.”

He placed His name upon us, forgave all our sin, and made us heirs of His eternal kingdom. On Confirmation Sunday, we join with our Confirmand to say “Yes!” to God. Because of all He has done for us in Jesus, and because He has brought us to faith in Jesus through the Holy Spirit, we respond with a commitment to live for Him in all we think, say and do. Congratulations to Graden for making it through the torture of Pastor John’s Two-Year Confirmation Class☺.
